The Twin Experiment

Although not confirmed by DNA tests, we have always thought of our twin boys as fraternal as to us they look entirely different from one another, although there are most definitely some physical similarities.  Being that a strange phenomenon exists whereby the word “Twins” seems to instill a mental block in a person’s brain, I have always supposed that was the reasoning behind so many peoples’ inability to tell Max and Connor apart.

Recently many of the twins groups on Facebook have seen members posting pictures of their twins, whereby they have taken photographs of each of their twin sets, split the faces down the middle and joined them to create a single picture. It has been a rather interesting exercise in that the similarities in fraternal twins especially, have really been highlighted.

Fascinated by the outcome of these twin experiments, I decided to follow suite with my boys, the results of which have led me to believe that maybe other people are not so crazy in their inability to see the many differences in our boys that we do.

The first picture is Connor, the second Max and the third, half and half.  Connor on the left and Max on the right.

Garfield Naidoo - Cat Extraordinaire

This gorgeous cat used to belong to my neighbour, who has since moved away.  He just decided one day that he preferred our house to hers and so began the process of him 'moving in'.  It started with the odd visit, which then escalated to daily visits..... and somewhere along the line the boys began to feed him lunch, with my neighbours permission of course. One thing led to another and soon he was a permanent resident in our home, much to the boys' delight.  While my neighbour was rather sad that her most handsome cat had moved on, she was happy that he had the company of children, which is what he had apparently been craving since her daughter left home.  Garfield is not only a people cat, he is infact a people!

Rhino Awareness Posters - Grade 8

The Criteria:   Create a colourful poster that makes people aware of the plight of the Rhinos.

Thank goodness I have a rather large craft collection which the boys got stuck into.

Connor's Grade 8 Tech Project - Soma Cube

Connor chose to make a Soma Cube which is a kind of puzzle made up of smaller cubes, which when put together create one large cube.  There are apparently 240 different solutions for putting the puzzle together.

First Connor had to create 27 individual cubes which he made using a cube template and coloured cardboard I had lurking in my craft cupboard. He then glued cubes together to make up the 7 puzzle pieces.

When I gave the solution a go, I had to use the instructions we found on the internet, yet Connor managed to put it all together in a matter of seconds.  He did it differently everytime without a moments hesitation.  Clearly I'm not as logical as I thought.

Max's Grade 8 Tech Project

The projects for term 3 continue.  The boys had to create a 3D model of something.  They also had to submit an isometric drawing of it.  Our beautiful cat, Garfield Naidoo was Max's inspiration to make a piece of cat furniture. We found easy instructions for this at  http://www.evilmadscientist.com/2008/cardboard-cat-chaise/

Max used an old TV box to create his couch and then dug in my material stash to add some style to his creation.

Email Voodoo

Don't you just love recieving emails and other electronic messages that start with a heartwarming story that can sometimes bring tears to your eyes, and then proceed to threaten you with all sorts of horrific outcomes should you not immediately pass the message on to freak out at least 10 more of your friends?

Admittedly I do sometimes pass those messages on, not in a far reaching attempt to secure my good fortune or increase my cash flow, but instead to share the beautiful words......which is very easily done by deleting the creepy bit at the end before sending!

This world and those I care for are far better served recieving encouraging words during hard times than veiled threats me thinks

Sunday Drive - Piggly Wiggly Country Village - Natal Midlands

I’m the type of person who enjoys the odd Sunday drive to wherever the road takes me, however not generally at the same pace an old couple may enjoy in their vintage vehicle.

Sunday’s beautiful weather inspired mom and I to take a gander into the Midlands. Having the boys and their friend Greg with us, we decided it best to visit a spot where everyone could enjoy themselves. The Piggly Wiggly Country Village came to mind as I’ve had the good fortune of popping in there once before with friends.

It is a wonderful family venue with an array of quaint stores surrounding a mini putt-putt course, a jungle gym and a good patch of grass for youngsters to release a bit of energy. In two shakes of a leg, the boys were off to play a round of miniature golf while Mom and I settled ourselves down to a cup of coffee on the comfy couches of the Piggly Wiggly Restaurant. The boys tracked us down a bit later as we browsed through the shops, only to grab some cash for a pizza and a juice, which they went off to enjoy on the opposite side of the Village.

We found them again sometime later thoroughly enjoying the art of wax at the Candle Dipping Shop. Max, having chosen a fairly simple candle to colour, was deep in conversation with Madeleine the shops owner. She was patiently teaching him a very interesting wax technique using water. Max was captivated by the experience and suggested that we should definitely experiment further at home.

All too soon the fun filled day had run away with us and it was time to go. It was a truly fabulous experience to drive home to the background sounds of laughter and excited chatter about the amazing time had by the three sweaty bodies in the rear of the vehicle. I even got a “Thank-you mom”. See you again soon Piggly Wiggly Country Village!

Ladies Pamper Day - Augusta Coutry Estate - July 2013

While the boys hung out with their granny, I ducked off for a bit of me time. This weekends Ladies Pamper Party and Beauty Fair at Augusta Country Estates Golf Club was entirely fabulous, and while similar to the last, this one afforded us more pampering. For the price of a ticket my friend and I received a goodie bag full of delectable samples of high end products, slippers, body products and a beautiful yellow rose on arrival. This was followed by a welcome drink which ranged from our choice of sherry, wine or fruit juice.

The club had been transformed into a pampering fiesta on both floors. There were so many delightful free treatments to choose from, we almost didn’t know where to begin…..manicures, mini-facials, make-over, hand treatments, foot massages, neck and shoulder massages, hairstyling, the list goes on. The treatments on offer were mostly undertaken by students from the Beauty Academy as part of their training as well as some sponsored by individual suppliers. My amazing friend didn’t stand a chance as I took the opportunity to test out a few of the auto settings on my new Nikon D5100, and she became my model. (Photo album to be loaded later). This seemed to cause some murmurings amongst the crowds of ladies, a few of whom enquired about why my buddy had the paparazzi following her around – LOL.

Each of our tickets were also entered into the lucky draw and the range of prizes was stunning. To add even more hype, the handbag game gave us another opportunity to win spot prizes if you could make it to the MC with the called for items faster than the next woman. That led to some hilarious antics as rather a few highly competitive women dug frantically in their handbags to haul out what was called for.

Amidst the beauty regimes you could also treat yourself to a bit of a shopping spree with many lovely things on offer at brilliant prices. Once again I made a beeline for the cupcakes, a delicious indulgence, after which I picked up two super jerseys from Simply Stunning fashions at a discounted price. I also spotted a beautiful handbag which my sneaky mate later surprised me with as a gift. What a special friend!

With so much action on the go, one does get a tad peckish. It’s comforting to know that a quick trip up to the bar area yields a large range of cheese and biscuits which can be joyfully washed down by another glass of wine! I have heard rumours that there is to be another ladies day in October, so I will definitely be keeping my ears to the ground.

Cry for our beloved Country

Driving to La Lucia this morning to drop Connor at tennis, I stopped in at the petrol station in Springfield.  I watched as a not too shabbily dressed beggar approached an African woman with pleading eyes and hands cupped in front of his chest, as he asked for her assistance please.  Without a moment’s hesitation, she skillfully sidestepped the demure character and carried on walking, not once looking at him or uttering a word.

We continued our journey encountering beggar after beggar at just about every robot and stop street, the only thing differentiating them from one another being their state of appearance. Some were raggedly dressed, others had gimpy appendages, the odd one clutched a sign scrawled on a scrap of cardboard, one or two staggered precariously among the rush hour traffic miraculously avoiding being sideswiped; while a few held up bin bags offering to swap the rubbish from your car for a handful of coins.

Each and every one of them approached my closed window, only to move onto the next vehicle as I automatically shook my head no and stared straight ahead avoiding eye contact.  Our return journey after dropping Connor at the courts, resulted in more of the same vigorous head shaking and hand waving dismissal of both the same and some new beggars.

Later this morning I dropped in at the Pavilion to pick up a few necessities and upon leaving the building through the sliding doors at entrance 6, encountered a bedraggled, sun wrinkled Gogo with two young snotty nosed children in tow.  I immediately set my jaw, looked ahead and made a hasty retreat for my car ignoring her withered pleas.  It was only when I was heading home through yet another barrage of beggars, that it suddenly hit me how hard my heart has become to the sight and plight of our country’s down trodden.

It is rather a frightening reality that poverty has become so prevalent and in our face that I rarely feel compassion for it anymore, instead I find myself annoyed and irritated by the constant demands made by the begging fraternity. My feelings of animosity are especially aggravated by the odd wave of guilt at the fact that I am not, and probably will never be, in a financial position to save all of those who are apparently unable to save themselves.

It is little wonder that violent crime has become the norm in South Africa since we are more and more becoming a nation devoid of humanity.  The ability to value people above possessions will soon be a widespread rarity.  I fear the dawning of the day when instead of having emotions of deep sympathy and genuine concern for friends, neighbours and random strangers affected by horrific injustices, I simply experience selfish relief that it wasn’t yet my turn.

Cat Nip

Our beautiful big ginger cat, Garfield Naidoo has never been one of those to enjoy a shop bought cat toy.  He has been known to enthusiastically dabble with the occasional piece of string dragged past his nose or have a vigorous argument with his tail but otherwise, when not catching a snooze in a shady spot in the garden, he’ll be out hunting (thankfully he’s not too often successful).

Fairly recently I came across a catnip hedgehog discarded at the till point when shopping for groceries with a friend, and made one of those willful purchases.  When I got home I carefully decanted some of the dried catnip into the hedgehog and presented Garfield with this new phenomenon.  He took a sniff, his eyes lit up and he proceeded to snatch it out of my open hand.

He had us in stitches as he flick flaked the brown ball of fluff around the room, gnawing at it vigorously and then throwing it high into the air after which he’d bat it away and chase it like a cat possessed only to start all over again. There was a good 5 minutes of leaping around before he flopped to the floor exhausted, gathering the faux creature under his chin.

It’s been well over a few weeks now and much to my delight; the novelty has not yet worn off. I still find immense pleasure in watching him re-discover the somewhat now bedraggled thing of his affection at random times of each day, and tuck into it like it’s the first time he’s seen it.  However I must remember to hide it at night, as his 2am play sessions are enough to make any jittery South African reach for their tazer…….

Check yourself at the door

We live in such a highly strung world where we are faced with so much animosity, stress and rage on a daily basis.  Most days it's extremely difficult to remain calm and we tend to lash out rather than step back, take a breath and apply logical thought. The ability to engage in rational debate and mediation is fast being lost even by professionals who have been supposedly trained to deal with such circumstances effectively.

It seems to have reached a point where the art of issuing a simple heartfelt apology has been lost, as it appears that admitting your downfalls and humanity is seen as a weakness rather than a strength. Too often many of us choose to tackle sensitive issues with aggression in an effort to stand our ground in the face of adversity and possibly underlying guilt.  We project our insecurities onto others because we seem to feel that if we never admit defeat, we will at all costs come out the victor in the end.  In the modern world it appears to be all about who wins and not about what is actually right!

The worst result of this crazy thought process is the emergence of double standards depending on which side of the fence you happen to be caught on at any given moment. To my mind for us to even entertain the thought of saving our planet and our children from all that is wrong with the world, we first have to save ourselves! Is it really that difficult to accept our limits, embrace our defeats, honour good morals, and when we happen to be in the wrong, douse the fire with a humble apology?

Max's Mercury Project

As with Connor, Max too had to make something from space using recycled materials.  He chose to make Mercury.  See Connor's project below this for more instructions on making the paper mache' shell and hanger system.
